Project:

REHABILITATION OF THE PROVINCIAL ROAD ROSAZZA-S.GIOVANNI-OROPA

Owner:

Province of Biella

Client:

Province of Biella

Project description:

The 13km-long existing mountain road permitted the connection between the Cervo Valley and the Oropa basin, through the Rosazza tunnel, built in the mid 1800. In June 2002, a major flood event caused many debris flows along the main streams traversing the provincial road. In addition, on the Oropa side a large landslide completely destroyed the road for several hundred meters. The project consists of the rehabilitation of the road along the damaged stretches as well as the general improvement of the alignment and the road section for reasons of safety.

Geologic context:

The road develops along the late alpine intrusive Biella pluton that is formed by granitic rocks. The main rock type is the sienite, a rock that has been mined since the roman ages for ornamental purposes. The bedrock is covered by a relatively thin colluvium. The landslide on the Oropa mountainside is classified as a debris-avalanche, involving a more than 10m-thick colluvial deposit.

Location:

Rosazza-Oropa - Italy

Cost estimate:

€ 9,000,000

Design and consultancy services:

Preliminary, final and detailed design, construction supervision: Geological and hydrogeological studies, co-ordination of geotechnical site investigations, geotechnical design, and construction supervision of the geotechnical works. The geological and geotechnical studies are to be focused on the landslide.
