Design and consultancy services:

Alternative excavation method for the Turina Tunnel: tthe Owner's call for tender required an alternative design for the excavation method of the 600m-long Turina tunnel, aiming at construction time reduction. The proposed design was defined by full-face excavation with systematic face and tunnel perimeter ground treatment consisting of jet-grouting columns. Invert closure is foreseen in the vicinity of the front using a temporary bridge structure that enables the excavation to proceed without interruption. Self-drilling bolts, hinge-joint steel sets and the employment of a high speed boomer device for the installation of the pipe umbrella were also proposed as a means to accelerate construction.

The technical proposal obtained the highest rating (amongst 9 bidders) by the Owner's committee and permitted the Contractor to offer a significant price and construction time reduction, resulting in the award of the contract.

Period:

2003
