Project description:

Three apartment buildings are to be built at the north-east Turin, at an area that used to be occupied by industrial warehouses. When constructed they are to be the highest buildings in Turin (75m -high). The foundation area of each building is in the range of 800m2, and their weight about 15-16000 tons.

Geologic context:

Alluvial deposits consisting of sandy and silty gravel. Clayey and sandy silt substratum at 15m depth. At the time of the geoetechnical investigations the groundwater table was located at 7m below ground level. However, the groundwater table is expected to oscillate, up to 4m, with the level of the close-by river Dora.

Location:

Turin - Italy

Start/end date:

10-2003/2005

Cost estimate:

€ 300,000

Design and consultancy services:

Foundations design: the non-uniform building height and the severe wind loads induce uneven pressure to the raft foundation resulting in differential settlements of the order of 6-7cm, that are further augmented when the actual geotechnical stratigraphy (as resulted from boreholes and geophysical surveys) is considered in the finite element models. Various technologies: large diameter piles, groups of micropiles, jet grouting, and vibro-flotation, were analyzed (alone and in combination) as a means to reduce settlements for the various loading combinations. The ground improvement technology chosen was that of jet grouting, implemented by 12m-long, Ø1500 columns, in a 3x3m grid.

Period:

2003
