Project:

BOB AND LUGE TRACK FOR THE 2006 WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES - LOT 1

Owner:

Agenzia Torino 2006 (organization responsible for the construction of the Winter Olympic Games infrastructure)

Client:

ATI Torino Scavi Manzone SpA - SICOS SpA

Project description:

Lot 1 consists mainly of (i) earth-moving and (ii) pile foundations for the bob and luge track. The original design had foreseen piles of large diameter to bear the particularly high lateral and vertical loads of the track. The accumulative length of the piles is 11000m. According to the schedule of the Project the second Lot (buildings and track construction) shall start 4 months after the beginning of Lot 1 works resulting in a very tight works planning.

Geologic context:

Glacial deposits, characterized by clayey and sandy silts, and the presence of gravels and boulders. The water table is located 2.5-3m below the ground level.

Location:

Cesana Torinese - Italy

Start/end date:

06-03/12-03

Cost estimate:

Design and consultancy services:

Technical support and design for Tender preparation: Geotechnical design of an alternative foundation system consisting of groups of steel tube reinforced micropiles. A stiffening collar increases the capacity of the pile group to lateral deflection. The proposed solution offers time-savings, and mitigates the risk for works duration overruns. Detailed equipment and resources planning permits the contemporary development of the earth and foundation works. An innovative solution for the deep drainage trenches was also proposed.

The technical proposal obtained the highest rating by the Owner's committee.
