Project:

EL CAJON HYDROELECTRIC PROJECT

Owner:

Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE)

Client:

Ohl-Astaldi-Alstom J.V.

Project description:

The 750MW project is located along the Santiago river and is part of the homonym hydropower complex. The scheme consists of the 186m-high dam and a series of underground opening. The principal underground works are: two diversion tunnels (14x14x800m), two penstocks (8m diameter., 200m), machine hall (22x50x100m), oscillation chamber (15x60x67m), two draft tubes (9?x12x40m), tailrace tunnel (14x14x310m).

Geologic context:

All underground works are to be realized in a volcanic - sedimentary sequence, mainly consisting of ignimbritic litho-types, and interbedded volcanic conglomerates. The rock mass is of in general good to fair quality. Major faults intersect the penstock and the caverns.

Mexico

Design and consultancy services:

Technical support for Tender preparation (underground works): geotechnical analysis (primary support, final lining) for all of the underground openings. In defining the reinforcement requirements for the concrete sections for the various internal hydraulic pressure project values, the quality of the ground mass conditions was considered and a decay of the primary support capacity was assumed. Verification of the steel lining section for the penstocks. Preliminary design of an alternative scheme where the machine hall is located on the surface.

Period:

2002-2003
