Project:

DOUBLE TRACK PROJECT BETWEEN IPOH - BUTTERWORTH - PADANG BESAR - TUNNELS BUKIT BERAPIT AND LARUT

Owner:

Government of Malaysia - Ministry of Transport

Client:

C.M.C. COOPERATIVA MURATORI CEMENTISTI

Project description:

The tender design of the two twin single-track tunnels: 2560m-long Berapit, and 400m-long Larut, was developed by Halcrow Pacific Pty. The tunnels have a net area in the range of 42m 2 . Characteristic of the alignment of the Berapit tunnel are the long stretches with low overburden. Both conventional and mechanized excavation is foreseen, however the conventional one is better developed in Tender documents. The alignment underpasses state roads/highways and a railway tunnel.

Geologic context:

The area of the Berapit and Larut tunnels is characterised by the presence of the Bintang granite of Triassic age. Good to very good rock mass conditions seem to be associated with the higher overburden (max in the range of 200m), while water-bearing residual soil or alluvial deposits are to be encountered in the lower overburden sections (for a total of 500m for the Berapit alignment). Shear zones of limited thickness, but associated with inflow, are also to be crossed.

Design and consultancy services:

Technical support for Tender preparation (tunnels) - Appraisal of geological and geotechnical conditions vis-à-vis the construction method: analysis of Tender documents, evaluation of geomechanical conditions with respect to the foreseen excavation methods; definition of the site investigation approach, design methodology, definition of excavation and support method for the crossing of the geotechnical poorer zones, works planning.
