Project:

TIZI OUZOU - ALGIERS WATER TRANSFER

Owner:

A.N.B. (Algerian National Agency of Dams)

Client:

ASTALDI S.p.A. - VINCI S.A. Consortium

Project description:

The project aims at easing Algiers' major water supply problems. It includes four tunnels (accumulative length: 10.9km), a water treatment plant, a pumping station and reservoirs. The internal diameter of the tunnels is 2.5m. Hydraulic pressure reaches 11bars. Two of the tunnels (Draa Bhen Khedda and Tizi Ouzou) have to be completed by the 18th month.

Geologic context:

The tunnels are to be excavated in marns of predominantly good to fair geomechanical characteristics (as defined in the Tender documents). Overburden thickness does not exceed 100m.

Location:

Algiers (Algeria)

Start/end date:

2002-2007

Cost estimate:

-

Design and consultancy services:

Technical support for Tender preparation (tunnels) - Alternative (TBM) design: definition of an alternative design based on TBM excavation, structural design of honeycomb lining, and (as an option) cast in place lining; works planning. In defining the reinforcement of the two lining alternatives the interaction with rock mass was considered as cooperating for the high internal hydraulic pressure.

Period:

2002
