Project:

UNDERGROUND SCHEME FOR CAPTURING DRINKABLE WATER FOR AN ALPINE COMMUNITY

Owner:

Azienda Energetica Metropolitana Torino S.p.A.

Client:

Azienda Energetica Metropolitana Torino S.p.A.

Project description:

The proposed scheme is located at chainage 2300-2350 of the diversion tunnel of a hydroelectric plant, that is currently under construction. The water catchment scheme consists of a 45m-long adit where is located the sediment basin and the other hydraulic structures, and the two drainage tunnels (accumulative length 60m).

Geologic context:

The tunnels are to be excavated in mica schists and quartz mica schists of the Ambin complex. The quality of the rock mass is of fair geomechanical characteristics, but characterized by very high water inflows. Major shear zones have been intersected during the excavation of the diversion tunnel.

Location:

Susa Valley (Italy)

Start/end date:

-

Cost estimate:

500,000€

Design and consultancy services:

Feasibility design of an underground scheme for capturing drinkable water for an Alpine community: design of the scheme based on Bieniawski's design methodology: definition of the functional requirements, constraints, solution components. Design of the sections, construction works duration and cost estimation. The adit is inclined in order to gain the necessary hydraulic head that permits the transportation of water to the upstream portal, through a tube located at the diversion tunnel, without the need for pumping. The drainage tunnels are located outside the highly fractured water bearing zones in order to minimize construction difficulties.

Period:

2002
